It was great to be home this evening. We've had a nice English supper. Mum had roasted a lamb joint because she didn't know if we would be home or not. I later retired to my office and typed several memorandums for Winston. One concerning the confederation. A second concerning France's war plans then a third about Belgium and Holland. Eventually I split the last one into separate memorandums for each nation. It was only 21:00 so I decided to walk to the hotel. There were only half a dozen guests so I sat at the bar and drank two White Shields. I'd just finished my second beer when I noticed Daryl the carpenter walk into the other bar. I motioned him to join me so I bought drinks for us.
"Good evening, Daryl. How is the glider business? Better than making chairs?" We sat a small table for two.
"Much more fun, sir."
"I'm off duty, Daryl. My name's Bob. Try to fill me in on what's going on in Edgware without being too specific. How is progress on the single-seater?"
"The fuselage is finished. They are now working on streamlining the extra fittings. I'm working on the two-seater. The wiring to the tail wings are being optimised. I didn't realize that gliders were so complicated."
"These are advanced gliders."
"I'm learning so much about the properties of different woods. Really! I'm a master carpenter and I feel like an apprentice again. A lot of these techniques could be applied to furniture. New designs made possible by using these super strong laminates."
"I was hoping you would see that. They use the latest technologies. When you're in the air losing a piece of the glider can be catastrophic. Losing a chair leg only results in a bruised ass. Big difference. Have the extra fittings been running?"
"Yes but not outside of the hangar."
"Do you see Geoffrey Sr. everyday?"
"He's there most of the time. These are important gliders aren't they?"
"Important for the success of the firm too. We could need thousands of these gliders."
"Plenty of work then."
"Enough to keep you busy for years. What's the pay like?"
"No complaints. There's opportunity for overtime too because four more prototypes are being built. Let me think. Three are them are single-seaters."
"Thanks, Daryl. You've been very helpful. When you see Geoffrey tomorrow please tell him that I'm back from Europe and hope to visit him later in the week."
"I'll do that."
