I went to the MCD and explained to Sally and Johnny Wilkins what had happened in Luxembourg the last few days. Louis and Wilfrid were informing the others. There were many questions especially about the Federal Defence Policy Council which is to be in London. It became obvious that more personnel will be required if I'm going to be the head of the British component. Where do we locate the Council? It can't be in this building for obvious reasons. I need a deputy commander and Sally also needs an assistant not another typist, (we already have a typing pool). This looks like a weekend project then I need to discuss it at the next MoD meeting before changing anything. Sally has heard of Konrad Adenauer and recalls that he and Gustav Stresemann disagreed about the future of the Weimar Republic. Stresemann signed an agreement with the Soviets while Adenauer preferred integration with the western democracies. Johnny gave me a document which he received this morning. The Wright R-2600 engines appear to be useless. We sold four to Bristol and three of them failed after less than 10 hours of use. The three we transferred to the Air Ministry haven't faired much better. That is annoying. I have time to cancel the next batch of thirty to be shipped this month. In fact that is very annoying because our entire FAA programme is dependent on that engine. I telephoned Winston before leaving for home and told him the bad news. I've decided to delay my trip to Spain and Italy by one week.
