Trying to make the best out of a relatively quiet weekend. Living on post, I can clean up my desk when I want to - but I also meet some of the other guys who are here. Eventually we ended up at the Saffron Hotel for Sunday lunch. Dinner with our "American" Canadians.
Some are curious about my role within the HQ so I said that I'm just part of the family. OK, I told them the RAF will announce that they intend expanding and that officers who qualify can take flying lessons - if you are physically qualified the RAF will give lessons but during off-duty hours. Theory in the evenings and hands-on at the weekends. I also told them about the Polish acquisition of German vehicles - Guy Simonds will be going to Poland to inspect what they have. Do you have a similar gun-carriages in the US?
Then I mentioned that I am looking for volunteers for our Parachute Infantry programme - working-hours duty not our free-time. A four-week course. If in the US you are not interested that is your problem but if the Germans and the Russians are interested then so are we British! I nudged I.D. and said that he's volunteered - dagger looks - then colonel Patton said that he is game if he can also go to Poland to check the Kraut equipment. I said that it is a Military Intelligence party, not ours, but we'll try to arrange it. So I have 5 and a half candidates.
There were also questions about spouses joining the guys - I answered that they should ask the XO - I'm single therefore unqualified to answer....I just don't know!
