This morning's Abyssinia meeting was very interesting. We heard from Admiral Keyes that Major Wingate's mission in Eritrea is making excellent progress. Working with his former colleagues in the Sudan Defence Force, (SDF), he recruited personnel from his former 'enemies', slave traders and ivory poachers, and is using them to carry out intelligence gathering and arrange for 'safe dwellings' in Asmara, the capital of Eritrea. His smugglers have already smuggled weapons and ammunition into Eritrea.
We shall skip tomorrow's meeting and will put together a draft presentation instead. It will be reviewed Wednesday so that the final draft will be ready on Thursday.
General Gort informed me that there will be a German delegation in London in a fortnight from now to discuss a Anglo-German Naval agreement. That struck me as a little strange because how can we have a separate agreement with Germany without our friends being involved. Apparently, the Admiralty believes that Hitler's 35-percent offer is good one because we can insist on 35% for each type of warship, not 35% of our total tonnage which can then be used to build any kind of vessel. My only comment was if we could discretely ask whether Admiral Canaris could be part of the delegation.
We parachute 'volunteers' have extra evening PT starting today so that we are fit for the training course. Got to go....
