My trip to France was interesting. Admiral Muselier did most of the talking but I was present at all the meetings. The War Minister, Édouard Daladier, was asking about more details and we replied that officially we had been tasked to draw up a strategy, nothing detailed, and at present we are choosing key personnel and setting up our headquarters.
Our requests for the two French lieutenant-colonels at TRADOC be promoted to full colonels was granted as well as having a brigadier-general from their General Staff College be promoted to major-general. He will be the deputy commander Abyssinian Expeditionary Force's Mobile Corps. Admiral Muselier asked for Admiral Darlan to be his deputy at Toulon and that Brigadier-General René Prioux also be appointed to our planning group. He is currently the Commander of French Cavalry in Tunisia.
Finally it was agreed that HMS Rodney arrives at Cherbourg to receive the French guests on Thursday at 1200 hours. Afterwards I was driven to Le Bourget to catch a flight back to RAF Duxford. I'm beginning to like this courier job - the only disadvantage is that work has accumulated on my desk. I need an assistant to do this when I am not here. I immediately thought of CPT Wales and the General agreed.
I told Prince Edward the good news at dinner. It's a great job. You get to see everything that's going on in TRADOC but you are not allowed to talk about anything to anyone except the General, Colonel Fuller and myself - as far as I know, we are the only ones with the necessary security clearance. Don't open anything marked for the General's eyes only! Hands off MY personal mail, too!
