The British delegation headed by Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden has made the following announcement: The expansion of the Egyptian Army will begin this year. It will consist of: a GHQ Staff; the Cairo District Command; 11 infantry battalions organised into three brigades; two cavalry squadrons; four mule batteries; one garrison artillery company; one motor MG battery; an engineer company; various departments, ancillary services and training schools. Sometime during 1936, a light tank unit will be formed. The Army will be equipped along British lines and by 1937 the Army will number around 30,000 officers and men. The Air Force, supported by British technical staff, will grow to four or five squadrons by May 1937, equipped with British Gladiator and Audax aircraft. It has also been agreed that the Egyptians have the right to deploy troops in the Sudan. It also does away with the position of inspector-general but provides for a British Military Mission to train and equip the Egyptians along British lines. The Mission, which will next month under Major-General J. Marshall Cornwall, and effectively assert control over the Egyptian armed forces.
