It was a long day, we have visited a dozen coastal towns. We had lunch in Imperia, an interesting town because it is the home of the 5th Infantry Division. The unit is in the process of being shipped to Libya. Something they wouldn't be doing if they had knowledge of our plans. I also read in today's newspaper that Mussolini is calling up a further 75,000 troops. Mussolini created the city of Imperia in 1923 by the union of Porto Maurizio and Oneglia and the surrounding village communes. It therefore has two railway stations. The Oneglia station has marshalling yards. There is a wide bay near the Porto Maurizio station. It would be ideal for troops coming ashore.
Continuing down the coast, all the railway stations are near to the coast, often within 50 metres.
Savona itself is an industrial town and is one of the chief seats of the Italian iron industry, having iron-works and foundries, shipbuilding, railway workshops, engineering shops, and a brass foundry. It will definitely be a target for our capital ships. The railway station is centrally located and equipment on flatbeds can easily be off-loaded. It is a long sprawling town along the Ligurian coast and any landings here would need naval artillery support.
I've used up five films so far. Tomorrow we'll be driving to Genoa. I'll try to buy some more film there. Time for dinner.
