We arrived at the border at about 10 o'clock and had no problem crossing the border - the guards only checked our passports then waved us through. In Monte Carlo we checked in at the famous Hôtel de Paris. After we had settled in I went to the main reception desk and enquired if I could use an office with a couple of typewriters. I also need a to rent a white jacket with black bow-tie for the Casino this evening. Thirty minutes later Sally was typing a detailed list of what was on the film rolls. We have used 33 rolls but two of them are private. I started translating, (decoding), my travel observations. Sally is not allowed to read that. Sally needed two hours but I needed an extra hour or so. She went to buy a nice dress for this evening.
Before dinner I explained the rules. We don't drink much and no alcohol. We go to the toilet before sitting at the roulette table and we drink as little as possible at the table. Because the croupiers always give back winnings in large denominations you need to keep changing large chips back to 10 Franc chips, or whatever else I specify. Finally, no discussions at the table - only one person plays.
At the Casino I changed ca. £130 into FF 10,000, half of it in 10 franc chips and the remainder in 50 franc chips. I found a well visited table and after watching for about 15 minutes sat at a vacant seat and started playing with 10's on the 5 sixths that didn't win in the last roll. As expect I received a 50 + 10 chips back. If I lost I played 50 franc chips. Once I had play 250 francs per bet - luckily it paid out. I was playing squares every now and then with 500 franc bets. I won almost half of them. The first five times I gave 2000 francs to Sally in order to pay back our 10,000 starting money.
After slightly more than an hour of playing I started using a minimum of 50 francs per bet. My birthday is on the 18th so when it looked good I put 10,000 franc, the table limit, on the 17-18-20-21 quadrat and it won! Other people at the table were beginning to watch us. Thirty minutes later I was beginning to tire so I decided to plan an exit. The whole time at this table the zero had never been rolled. So I put 5,000 franc on it and lost - that got me a slap from Sally. So a couple of rolls later I placed 10,000 on zero and it won!!! I gave 5,000 to the croupiers and quit the table with about 500,000 francs. That's more than £6,000. Sally also had the 10,000 franc starting money so we could put that back in the expenses money which General Gort had given me. We had enough in England to cover the £130 but now we don't need to spend our savings. We retired with a bottle of expensive Champagne to celebrate the day. Tomorrow we are driving to the AEF HQ to turn in our reports.
