The guns in Europe and Africa are silent, the war against Mussolini's Italy is over. I've been thinking about the proposed SE European Treaty and I don't think it will last very long. Germany and the Soviet Union will do everything possible to destabilize it. Many of the nations are already politically unstable and I doubt very much whether Britain or France would be willing to commit ground troops to any conflict in the Balkans. For the moment though there will be a sense of security. Economically neither Britain nor France are capable of being a European police force.
There has been a change of plans. Generals Gort and Smith plus myself are to fly to Paris while the remainder will travel by train and ferry to England. Apparently George P. Smith is to receive a medal from the French. Winston Churchill and the CIGS, Field Marshall Montgomery-Massingberd, will be arriving in the evening after a long flight from Cairo. So much for my hopes of sleeping in my own bed tonight.
