We first visited the Royal Parachute Regiment Headquarters. MAJ John Hawkins, ex-Experimental Parachute Company, is the acting-Commander of the 1st Battalion. They don't have a jump-trained LTC yet. We talked about Africa for a while. I was commander of Baker Company for 36 hours before I was promoted to a squad leader. Then we got down to business.
General Gort opened, "Secretary Churchill has ordained that TRADOC will command the Blue Forces in the upcoming FTX next month and we are free to choose which units and Bob has decided we need paratroopers."
I continued, "we are talking about a platoon-strength night jump and I particularly need a squad of commo-guys. Can you help?"
"A platoon is no problem, I can offer you a whole company. I've got 4 radio specialists here in my HQ but I can ask around for others with radio experience. I'm receiving about 100 to 150 new personnel each week from the training school so I'll be looking for graduates with the skills you're looking for."
"That's great. I'll gladly accept a company. I have a squadron of Valentia's earmarked so a single aircraft can drop 3 or 4 groups to conduct raids, etc."
"Anything else?"
"I'll be commanding the main jump myself so the platoon leader can be my deputy commander. The company staff can be used to plan the smaller raids, matching up planes, pilots and jump personnel. The aircraft will be arriving at RAF Duxford NLT 04 Oct so if you can arrange the same we'll take over from there. What's the company commander's name?"
"Captain Mark Williams from 'A' Company."
"I just need his phone number then I'm done," I said to General Gort.
"Why don't you join us for lunch at the Officer's Club. We are meeting 4th Infantry leaders there. Do you get many volunteers from them?"
"They are very protective, General. Their troops have been warned about us."
"Maybe we can change that."
Next stop is lunch but I called Sally in London first.
