In a statement printed in the Völkischer Beobachter the German government protested strongly not being invited to the Peace Treaty deliberations in Bern on the 25th of September. A treaty of such importance should be hosted by the League of Nations and include all major European powers.
A spokesman from the Swiss Federal Political Department dismissed the German protest. The treaty is a result of an initiative started by the leader of this Department, Guiseppe Motta, after all mediation efforts in Geneva had failed. An agreement was reached despite massive interference by the German Foreign Minister von Neurath in Italy and Austria. Furthermore, France, Greece, the United Kingdom and Yugoslavia are no longer members of the League and have no confidence in its ability to promote peace in Europe.
