Sally, John and I arrived just after 07:00 and I was surprised to hear that yesterday evening General Gort had already received a phone call from London.
"Lord Nuffield didn't waste any time," I commented.
"What does he have to do with it?" He asked.
I recounted yesterday's conversation and that he'll probably receive a second call from London.
"Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister from the Air Ministry called yesterday. There is concern about the large number of aircraft requiring the Merlin engine from Rolls-Royce."
"We discussed that yesterday evening and there are already plans to greatly expand not only Rolls-Royce but also Supermarine and Hawker Aviation Companies. We are envisaging 1,500 units/month. All we need is a suitable location."
"They are suggesting Castle Bromwich near Birmingham. There is also an aerodrome there. The are also talking about Shadow Factories which can rapidly switch to military designs in the event of war."
"Vickers-Armstrong wants to produce military designs from the very beginning. Their existing facilities are being expanded for a later switch."
"They are talking about government funding."
"They should save the money to buy our products. Do you want me to call Edward Mitchell?"
"No, but in your capacity as Head of TRADOC at the MoD tell Sir Philip what you just told me."
I called him at 08:30 and he was pleased with what I had to say and again brought up government funding. "Knowing Edward Mitchell he'll probably insist on at least 51% ownership," I replied.
"How well do you know him?"
"I've only known him personally for one week but he is my father, long story, and we've had several long conversations about banking and the arms industry."
He suggested that we meet soon. "Monday afternoon Lord Gort and I will be at the new TRADOC annex near the MoD. Why don't you drop in to say hello. We already have a couple of RAF officers there."
"I know that you have Freeman. Who else have you stolen?"
I had to laugh, "A/Cdre Jack Baldwin, sir."
"Hmm. Until Monday."
