We arrived home late yesterday evening after what we consider a successful summit in Cherbourg. After constructive talks on Saturday, most of Sunday morning was spent formulating a joint-statement for release to the press. It is deliberately low-key, referring everything to the League of Nations. What isn't in the statement is the reason for our good mood. France has agreed to send a delegation to join us at TRADOC and we shall be cooperating in many areas, for example, production techniques, R & D and joint exercises. We don't know who will be coming here but I am sure they have their 'renegades' too. Next week we shall be receiving 25 Mle 1918 RSC semi-automatic rifles for evaluation and testing. It is our intention to replace the Pattern 1914 Enfield, Rifle No. 3, currently being issued to British troops. We need to give our Infantry more firepower. Also, France has pioneered the use of very large castings to form gun mantlets, turrets and eventually entire tank hulls. This opens enormous possibilities. All in all, a very constructive visit. Good news is that the MoD has authorized the procurement of 120 Vickers 6-Ton (Mark E, Type B) light tanks, including 10 trainer versions. We are now preparing for our meeting with the Americans next week. I don't know exactly when and where but I've been told that I am going. Looking forward to it.
