Tomorrow we shall be travelling to Portsmouth again, this time to board the battlecruiser HMS Renown - we'll be sailing to Norfolk, Virginia to meet President Roosevelt and his staff. This meeting is different to the one we held at Cherbourg last weekend. There will also be delegations from the banking and arms industry on board as well as our chief scientific advisor Henry Tizard.
We've been making a nuisance of ourselves at the Air Ministry. General Gort complained about the proliferation of Air Ministry specifications for new designs. They are often confusing and many aircraft being designed will be obsolete before the prototypes are built. We are suggesting a review of current specifications, followed by progress reports from the various aircraft manufacturers with the aim of channeling our resources for the most promising designs. A joint committee has been set up.
We've also recommended that a 6 pdr Tank Gun be developed which can also fire HE Shells; furthermore a 75mm Field Gun for use in close Support (CS) armoured vehicles which must also be able to fire armour-piercing (AP) ammunition. We have Army support for these measures.
We have a delegation from our shipbuilders visiting us this afternoon - they have a proposal for us! We are curious what they have to offer...
