I've spent most of the last few days at the Annex and MoD. I've been working with group which is putting together the comprehensive report on armoured formations. The goal is to complete it today so that Generals Gort and Fuller can study it over the weekend. We've also listed equipment which will be required, the expected date of availability of the new equipment and what can be used until the new equipment arrives. We've also presented exhaustive arguments explaining the reasons for the proposed organization. My main contribution was the independent armoured brigade.
On Wednesday retired MAJ Shepherd visited the Annex and brought Harold Turpin with him. Turpin had been a draughtsman at the Royal Small Arms Factory, (RSAF), in Enfield before being persuaded to join our venture. They have decided to use a small workshop in Middlesex and will work on the submachine gun first.
Yesterday I received a reply from Admiral Canaris. He told me that Rommel and his family were killed in a car crash while on vacation in Spain. He and Guderian will arrive on Thursday the 14th but without wives. I'm beginning to believe that Canaris has no idea that Rommel is still alive. Is he in for a surprise. I wrote back expressing my shock upon hearing of Rommel's death. I also told them that they need to bring their Ausgehanzug with them, i.e. their Dress uniform, and if they let me know what flight they'll be on I'll pick them up at the airport.
Deputy Foreign Secretary John Simon kept his word. Louis Mountbatten received at least a dozen large envelopes today. He's decided to hire three more assistants for Germany, Palestine and Spain desks.
Louis, George and I are going to the Army and Navy Club this evening. Sally will be visiting her parents so she will collect us at 11pm on her way home. I'm going over to the MoD to check my In-Box before coming back to change into civilian clothes. We intend eating at a restaurant before going to the Club.
