At the end of the Great War the Midlands Bank was the largest bank in the world and the government told them not to expand further without permission from the Bank of England. An exception was made for the Standard and Chartered banks as they fit well into an "Empire" bank. They are currently negotiating for a stake in the new Morgan Stanley investment bank being formed in New York City to give them access to the US market.
After the Great Depression there was considerable consolidation in the aircraft and shipbuilding industry. Armstrong-Whitworth is a major arms conglomerate. It controls Hawker, Supermarine, Vickers, Avro, Gloster and Rolls-Royce in addition to its shipyards. Many of the Naval shipyards have been placed under semi-government control and coordinate closely with HM Dockyards.
