Wilhelm Canaris, Heinz Guderian, Sally and I arrived in Colchester just after 13:00. I left the three of them at the Royal Parachute Regiment HQ with MAJ John Hawkins while I drove to the HQ, 4th Infantry Division to meet MG Dick-Cunyngham. George Patton, the designated commander of the 4th Armoured Brigade, had arrived earlier in the morning so they brought me up to date. Three new battalions will be raised from Territorial Army battalions assigned to each of the following regiments:
Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment, East Surrey Regiment, Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment.
The War Office had already decided to recreate Machine Gun battalions and the 2nd Bn, Royal Northumberland Fusiliers will be assigned to the 4th Armoured Division although only one company will join the brigade. The 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards will provide a cadre for the brigade's Reconnaissance Squadron. George will be selecting the officers and senior NCO's for his headquarters. They seemed to be doing fine without me so I said farewell and drove back to the Parachute Regiment. Ten minutes later we were on the road to Saffron Walden.
