I decided to 'warn' Dad that Sally and I would be arriving soon and asked if there is anybody available to bring me up to date on the AIOC situation. I didn't want to bring it up at Kenwood House this evening. Although it almost 4 pm on a Friday there were three managers present with Edward Jr. I apologized for the short notice and being so late.
"I shall be leaving for the Middle East next weekend and intend visiting the AIOC to assess the situation there. What can I expect to see?"
Edward answered. "You brought it to my attention a few weeks ago and it has been given the highest priority here. We do realize how important it is and I have given orders to fully implement the 1933 Agreement."
"That's excellent news. I can't over-emphasize how critical oil will be in a future conflict so we can't afford to antagonize Iran and that's why we need to fulfil all our obligations. Oil fields alone are not enough, we need refineries and a huge distribution system. The demand for fuel will at least quadruple in the next 5 years and will increase even more if there is war. Modern armies will grind to a halt without fuel."
"We have similar projections, Bob and we are working on it."
"I thinking of adding a few army engineers to your personnel in Iran. Not just to assist you, and spy on you, but to relieve the pressure on me. The engineers will be reporting to my department. This is a very hot topic in the MoD and I've managed to convince them to allow you to address the situation first and hopefully my visit there will confirm that you have everything under control. Wouldn't you also welcome a second opinion on what's happening over there?"
"We would appreciate that. Here is the package you requested as a Board member."
"Thank you, and I can separate the two jobs although at the moment I am here as a minister. Can we expand our distribution through acquisitions? By that that I mean oil tankers."
"That's one option we are considering. The other is to build more."
"Good. That's all I have. I'm going to study this dossier over the weekend. Can I do anything for you?"
"Do you have an exact date when you intend visiting Iran because Burmah Oil would like to have key people there at the same time."
"Not an exact date but I hope to be there by the 7th of December."
"I'll inform them."
"Thank you for your time, gentlemen. Dad, will John be at Kenwood this evening?"
"I don't know. Telephone him and ask."
So I did.
