John Gort was surprised at what we wanted to talk about. I had told him that it would be about my meeting at Downing Street and that's true. He listened patiently then said, "but how can he be Major Windsor at TRADOC?" "He won't be. At TRADOC we do MoD business, correct?" "That's true so are you suggesting an MoD position?" "Well, there is a vacancy." Both Edward and John were looking at me. "Head of the War Office. As King of England and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces what could be more appropriate? Edward is doing War Office work anyway." They were quiet for a long time. Edward finally broke the silence. "Bob, you are dangerous. When did you arrive at that idea?" "Just now and it would solve many problems not just yours. It's just a continuation of the game being played with me at the moment. An extra voice in the cabinet for Winston and the Prime Minister." "The Royal Family can't get involved in politics, Bob." "John, I'm not talking about politics. It's about defending the Empire and as our King he'll be our C-in-C he should have some role in the decision making. A qualified opinion at least." John stood up, "I have a phone call to make." When he returned he said that we're going to the Army and Navy Club. Winston and the Prime Minister will be there. I'll take that as an approval of the idea.
