I was surprised to see Sally still at work then she explained that COL Thomson had called so she knew that Winston and I would soon be arriving. Everything had been arranged including cakes and drinks in the conference room. "That's wonderful, Sally but the meeting will be in my office behind closed doors. With nobody listening outside." When Winston arrived we brought him to up to date. "A referendum is a novel idea. I doubt if that would be organized." "There will be general elections after the war is over. The referendum can be held at the same time. We'll be choosing not only our PM but also our King. There won't be a royal campaign though." Prince Albert asked which position Edward could hold within the MoD. "TRADOC is part of the MoD, Your Highness but I agree that a more suitable position has to be found. If we go to war his position would have to change again. I'll talk with Stanley Baldwin about your proposal and personally I believe it is a good solution." "If accepted there is no reason why Edward can't begin is new position at the beginning of January. I don't believe that being King is a prerequisite, Winston." "I agree and the public would have the Christmas holidays to digest it. Bob, I'm going to arrange a meeting for the two of us at Downing Street so please don't go home." "Can I bring Sally with me? I'm sure there is a waiting room somewhere." "There is also a very good canteen for the staff." "Do they have Champagne? We may want to celebrate."
