When we arrived at Fort Belvedere we were greeted by Edward. He told us that King George's condition is still serious but stable. I told him about the Versailles meeting planned and asked him if he could contact King Leopold and try to arrange a meeting with him and Queen Wilhelmina of The Netherlands. The 15th or 16th would be ideal. We talked for about 30 minutes then Sally and I drove home. Irvine had arrived a few minutes before we did and he invited us to a farewell party this coming Saturday. He would be leaving England for Palestine on Monday the 6th together with the a brigade battlegroup consisting of the 4th Infantry Brigade (Guards) plus supporting units. That surprised me somewhat because the 4th is part of the 2nd Infantry Division and it's normally earmarked for operations in Europe. We then called family and friends to wish them a Happy New Year before going to the Saffron Hotel for an hour or so. I told George Patton about my meeting at the bank on Tuesday. We're back in the tank design business. We've agreed to combine the tank gun version of the 25-pdr with a 14-cylinder version of the Merlin tank engine. All we need now is a ballistic hull design, the turret, secondary armament, a transmission to handle 800hp; i.e. there is still a long way to go. We also talked about New Year's Resolutions. There are a couple I really do want to keep but more about them tomorrow. It'll be a busy day so we retired early.
