After my obligatory Saturday shopping duty I barricaded myself in my 'office' and put the finishing touches on the Versailles package. I also typed it into French which isn't easy on a typewriter missing a dozen letters in the French alphabet. Today I typed the German version of the Confederacy proposal. I also prepared an additional page for the 'Code 13' operation. I showed it to John Gort and Edward and yesterday's farewell party. Both of them shook their heads but agreed to it. The party was great. To be honest I envy them going to Palestine. I enjoyed it in Tel Aviv. Sally did too.
Edward mentioned my slight difference of opinion with Winston. It was John Gort that got me thinking. In fact he gave me a broadside.
"I don't understand you, Bob. Your continuous desire to wear your uniform again is ridiculous. This next war hopefully won't last long enough for you to become a general and right from the start you have been pushing for a strong stance when dealing with Nazi Germany and now that we may have a chance of toppling Hitler you are complaining about being given a major role. Everyone else would be complaining if they didn't get the position. It's your plan and if there's a hitch along the way who better than you can come up with an idea to keep the ball rolling. Bob, you don't have to wear a uniform to serve your nation and in this country we are fortunate that civilians control the military. You are a smart person, Bob. Get your act together and let's go to Berlin together. One way or another."
"It's ironic. I've always been hoping that I'd follow you around, from command to command. I'm beginning to think that you want to follow me around. That's why you're pushing me." I hadn't noticed it but Winston was standing behind me and had heard most of the conversation.
"Is there another crazy plan of yours, Bob?" He asked. I gave him my sheet of paper. "I love it so arrange it."
"Tuesday, and we tell no one else."
"Agreed."
After the Sunday roast I completed my preparations. Edward and Wallis have arrived and we've arranged to go to the hotel for a while. Any excuse for another farewell party.
