Wilhelm and I got back to 3 Raynhams just after 11 o'clock. Sally had been sorting the correspondence we had brought home from MCD and she made me aware of a document from George Patton. I was too tired to react but I was really annoyed. I went to the MoD first to show the document to Winston.
"What kind of bullshit is this? Recommendations?" He asked the CIGS to come to his office and showed him the document.
"I'll fix that, gentlemen. Someone has overstepped their authority here."
"Please make it quite clear that I want to see everything already taken care of when I arrive within the next fortnight."
"I'll make that crystal clear. Rest assured, Bob."
After the CIGS had left I told Winston that Wilhelm is in my office. "Now would be a good time to talk to him about Enigma. Do you agree?"
"Yes, I agree."
The coffee was ready when Winston and I arrived. Edward was also there. "Good morning, Edward. So you have a trip to Spain and Italy. Congratulations."
"Not Palestine too?"
"No. Please take Sally home via Bern to give Giuseppe Motta a progress report if necessary. I need to speak to Wilhelm alone. I'll see you at lunchtime, Edward."
"We need to talk about German encryption and the Enigma, Wilhelm."
"Have you cracked the code?"
"Yes and no. Theoretically it shouldn't be possible but the Luftwaffe has been lazy and taking shortcuts. Parts of the message appear in clear text which enables us to decipher the rest of the message."
"Just the Luftwaffe?"
"Yes and I'm telling you this so that you are prepared for our meeting at 10 o'clock. You'll be meeting our Enigma team and I'm trusting you to be very careful with the information you receive. I'm going to suggest we put our heads together to create a super-Enigma. One that won't accept shortcuts."
"You are suggesting we utilize the same cypher-machine but hopefully different code books?"
"You can also use different wheels if you wish but you can also use a pre-determined combination if you need to inform us of top secret material. We also need to concentrate on Japanese, Russian and American codes."
"U.S. American?" Winston asked.
"Winston, we are friends not allies and they also want a piece of our cake. Do I need to remind you of yesterday's conversation with FDR? I have to walk across the road."
On the way to MCD Wilhelm asked, "King Edward doesn't know about Enigma?"
"Obviously not."
