The Emir was indeed pleased to meet us yesterday. First I informed him of the newest developments in Palestine but not any details of our grand strategy for the region. Very helpful was the information about local politics. Damascus has recently asked Amman and Baghdad for support but both have politely declined. That's a good sign because I am convinced that Syria has enough on its plate not to get involved in Palestine and hopefully France will soon be keeping them even busier. Iraq however is a different matter and the secret there could be to send a second Indian infantry brigade to Kuwait. That's a difficult move to sell though. I've agreed to suggest moving a couple of RAF Squadrons to Transjordan. This morning Orde has left for Addis Abeba via Port Sudan. He has a letter with him from me for HM Haile Selassie requesting that he consider allowing Jewish troops to volunteer for a move to Palestine to help support the creation of a Jewish state. I didn't put that in writing but Orde can fill in the missing details. Thomas and I have been driven back to Jerusalem so that I can inform General Howard of my talks in Amman.
