The Supermarine Spitfire prototype K5054 had its maiden flight at Eastleigh Aerodrome this afternoon. It was flown by Captain Joseph "Mutt" Summers, chief test pilot for Vickers, and powered by a 950 hp Rolls-Royce Merlin F engine with a two blade wooden propeller. It achieved a maximum speed of 330 mph and upon landing the pilot was so impressed by the performance of the aircraft that he told the engineers not to touch anything.
