I had a chance to speak with General Franco before meeting with the political leadership. He informed me that it would announced today that all prisoners from the 1934 Asturian revolt will be released. He wasn't too happy about it but agreed that it was a step in the right direction. The meeting afterwards was a bit of an anti-climax due to the upcoming announcement. I congratulated them on the decision and inquired whether they had other measures which could help unite a very divided nation.
I had previously stressed that I am not here as an official representative of the British government and that Secretary Churchill sent me here because I was in the vicinity. That I am his "eyes and ears" and I don't even know if the PM knows I am here. I have informed Secretary Churchill that the election result appears to be legitimate and can convey to them, the new government, that Britain supports a freely elected democratic Spanish government. They welcomed British support and reiterated their desire to join our European process. I had to remind them that it is very early days for 'our' European project but assured them that we welcome the Spanish desire to become an associate member. Britain, France and Germany are working on a Non-Aggression Treaty at the moment which will be a major development if achieved. Political and economic agreements will follow and only afterwards shall we be inviting other nations to join the 'club'.
The meeting only lasted just over an hour but it was very frank and constructive. General Franco and I retired for lunch at the club I visited last night where we met Wilhelm and General Rodriguez who has officially been recalled to duty. Another reason to celebrate.
