We had an interesting evening yesterday and we didn't discuss military matters the whole time. Erich and Reinhard should use the free time to buy some civilian clothes and get to know London a little so they don't need someone to act as a tourist guide the whole time. We did talk a lot about the situation in Germany because most people in the MoD and government believe that the change of power in Germany happened much too smoothly. There was a lot of bloodshed there after the end of the Great War. Germany was very divided and still is, particularly in the south. I believe that I relied too much on Crown Prince Rupprecht's assurances.
Apparently Hermann Göring, who was also the Minister President of Prussia, escaped the purge in January and went into hiding. He has since reappeared in Bavaria and is gathering supporters. Bavaria has been traditionally conservative and needless to say is opposed to the Wehrmacht/Adenauer 'regime' in Berlin. The new government is not overly concerned but is monitoring the situation.
General Ironside arrived with John Gort and he was enthusiastic about creating an 'Opposing Forces' (OPPFOR) unit within Eastern Command. John will coordinate with TRADOC HQ and our Polish colleagues there to arrange for Russian experts to be transferred to England. Several intelligence officers will also be arriving for our Russian Section within SOE. OPPFOR will be working with TRADOC not SOE.
Erich and Reinhard accompanied John and I to my 'office' to discussed their role in SOE. We quickly realized that we had neglected to consider the Baltic States in our plans. No doubt the Soviets would like to regain control there too. More work!
