No. 1 FTS formed by renaming RAF Leuchars, Scotland, in April 1935. It is primarily used to train Royal Navy personnel for the Fleet Air Arm. No. 2 FTS formed on 1 October 1934 in No 23 Group at Digby, equipped with Tutors for basic training and Harts and Furies for the service training phase. No. 3 FTS formed at Spitalgate near Grantham on 1 April 1928, equipped with Avro 504Ns and Siskins, which were later replaced by Tutors, Atlases and Harts. No. 4 FTS formed at Abu Suier in Egypt on 1 April 1921 to train pilots, primarily for squadrons based in the Middle East; it operated Avro 504s until they were gradually replaced by Tutors. No. 5 FTS formed on 26 April 1920 at Shotwick, near Chester, it was one of the RAF’s main flying training units equipped with Avro 504 Ks, Siskins, Tutors and Harts. Central Flying School is an independent unit at RAF Wittering, Leicestershire, since 07 October 1926.
