This year is not only the 100th Anniversary of the beginning of World War One but also the 75th Anniversary of the German invasion of Poland thus precipitating World War Two. Unlike WW1, WW2 was no surprise to world leaders. The dark clouds had been gathering for years before 1939. Hitler made his intentions quite clear in his book Mein Kampf.
Despite all the warnings the Western Allies were totally unprepared for war in September 1939.
