In the morning Sally went shopping while George Patton and I chatted about the preparations. He has the troops practising off-loading equipment from flatbed railcars with lots of live-fire training and PT. He said that all the troops destined for Africa should be there by the end of August so the vast majority of our naval transport capacity will be available for operations in the central and western Mediterranean. We toyed with Plan B options if our Turin plan is compromised. I like the idea of capturing Sardinia. Bombers based there, and on Corsica, could hit targets along the entire Italian west coast. Coupled with destruction of their Navy and the loss of their overseas colonies, Mussolini would have a difficult time maintaining power. This is the first time we talked about toppling Mussolini - if things are going badly for Italy we should consider dropping leaflets over Rome and Naples.
I told him about our visit to Vickers and how disappointing the A9 and A10 tank designs are. He liked the idea of the Infantry Support Vehicle and agreed that we should be able to field some before the end of the year. Even without anti-tanks rounds, the 75mm HE shell would defeat any known armoured vehicle.
Sally arrived back at the hotel at about 13:00. We had lunch then went to the airport and arrived home early evening. Tomorrow I am travelling to the Parachute Training Centre - looking forward to it. I don't know how much time I will have to write in my diary. In addition to the training Thomas Shaw has agreed to help me learn Arabic - it might be useful one day. Until next time.
