Anthony Eden and Winston Churchill met at the British ambassador's residence this evening. Secretary Churchill had visited Gibraltar and Avignon after the meeting with the Spanish at Badajoz. Secretary Eden gave a very positive report about Greece - they are on board. Yugoslavia is cautious - they have domestic problems at the moment. Romania made no firm commitment about exports of oil to Italy - they are asking for guarantees in case of demands from Russia.
The conversation was less friendly when Churchill brought up the subject of contacting Gibraltar by phone. Only TRADOC contacts Gibraltar and only by courier. We don't even talk about the Gibraltar mission on the telephone in England. This operation cannot afford to be compromised through loose talk. They will be emphasizing this with the French leadership tomorrow.
