The Ministry of Defence creates The Parachute Regiment. It is to be stationed at Colchester, Essex. Currently there are eight platoon-sized units which are cadres for eight Parachute Companies which will eventually form the 1st and 2nd Parachute Battalions, The Parachute Regiment. A 3rd Battalion will be raised in Scotland. Servicemen from all British units are eligible to volunteer.
