Ferdinand Schaal was born on 7 February 1889 in Freburg im Breisgau, Baden. Schaal joined the 3rd Baden Dragoon Regiment "Prince Carl" in 1908 at the age of 19 as a cadet. After the Great War he was accepted as a captain in the cavalry troops of the Reichswehr. Here he served from 1920 in the regimental headquarters of the 18th Regiment Reiter in Bad Cannstatt and in 1922 the staff of the 2nd Cavalry Division in Breslau. From 1925 he served for three years in Münster as commander of the 3rd Squadron 15th (Prussian) Cavalry Regiment, then promoted to Major. In 1929 he was transferred to the Defence Ministry to Berlin, where he worked for the next three years in the inspection of the cavalry. He then moved to the Army Personnel Office.
