I arrived back in Khartoum late this afternoon and sent a coded message to 51st Highland Division HQ. Plan approved, if Italy invades Abyssinia start loading the transports. I also briefed Brigadier Fortune, 154th Brigade.
Aude Wingate has informed me that Italian troops are moving southwards towards the Abyssinian border but they have done that twice before only to go back to their bases. It could be that they are applying pressure ahead of the League meeting on Monday. Emperor Haile Selassie has ordered a partial mobilisation in the border provinces of Tigray, Afar and Somalia.
I had dinner with Thomas Shaw and we were talking in Arabic so that I could practice. I'd noticed in Cairo that their dialect is a lot different to that in Transjordan, which Thomas had taught me. I shall retire early tonight, all this travelling is tiring me. It's now a week since I left England and it seems a world away.
