This evening Secretary Churchill met with the US Secretary of State Cordell Hull and George Dern, Secretary of War, and informed them of the latest situation, including intelligence information about Italian chemical weapons in Eritrea and that Rome has authorized the use of these weapons. He also told them of the decision to close the Suez Canal for Italian shipping will be announced at 18:00 GMT. He did not mention the hidden message in this announcement, but strongly recommended that US firms refrain from supplying Italy with war materials. The United Kingdom and France would gladly accept those materials. Secretary Churchill will be meeting President Roosevelt tomorrow evening.
