During the night the Italian forces have retreated into the outskirts of Mogadishu and attempts to create an organized defence are constantly being thwarted by naval gunfire support as well as the aggressive Indian advance. By lunchtime Mogadishu had been surrounded and Lieutenant-General Dill, the commander of British East African Command, was calling for the Italian forces to surrender. Given the hopeless Italian situation and the news of Italian forces in Libya surrendering negotiations commenced in the evening. By midnight the guns were silent and a formal surrender would follow in the morning.
