At the evening briefing Admiral Canaris could only present a gloomy picture of the situation in northern Italy and Africa. Foreign Secretary Konstantin Freiherr von Neurath also had nothing positive to report from Vienna, the negotiations have stalled. Furthermore there has been increased diplomatic activity by the British and French in southeast Europe while the Swiss have started their own peace initiative independent of the League Council. Time was running out for Germany to act.
