In a debate in the House of Commons Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin announced his decision not to travel to Stresa, Italy, to meet with Mussolini and a French delegation. Instead he and other members of his cabinet, as well as the Ministry of Defence, will be meeting with the French government in Cherbourg this weekend. The recent events in Germany will top the aggenda but the government is also concerned about the continued Italian military build-up in East Africa. Responding to questions the PM replied that he did not know if the French would still go to Stresa - it is their decision.
An increase in Defence spending was also announced and a limited increase in the size of the armed forces is under consideration.
Later in the evening King George V gave an unprecendented speech from Buckingham Palace supporting the PM and the new measures. Difficult times are approaching in Europe and the British Empire cannot afford to sit on the sidelines.
