70th Bomber Wing is the first UK unit to return home from the war. They have been active against targets in Italy, the Dodecanese, Libya then Italy again supporting Yugoslavian forces in the Trieste campaign. The campaign has taken its toll. 16 of the 48 aircraft didn't return although most were lost to crash landings not enemy action. Twelve aircrew lost their lives. The remaining 39 Heyfords will be organized in three squadrons - the 7th, 10th and 99th. The 97th Squadron will receive Hawker Hinds and will remain at RAF Catfoss in Yorkshire.
