I was only about an hour at HQ. I brought General Gort up to date and he confirmed that we're going to Colchester tomorrow morning. I showed him the list of recommended personnel and he knew a few of them. "They're not getting rid of their misfits, are they?"
He smiled, "no. Churchill is on our side, he wants us to succeed."
"Then we don't want to disappoint him, do we?"
I'd just about finished cleaning up my desk when COL Maczek dropped in. He's the senior Polish officer at TRADOC. "So now we're a Commo section?"
"Just in phase 1, sir. We need to locate the enemy headquarters so that we can capture or destroy them. Hopefully we'll also get their plans and any codes. The more we know about the enemy, the better. It's a key mission."
"I'm not complaining."
"I know. What's the latest on those two captured German vehicles?"
"I gave COL van Voorhis a copy of our report. It's in English."
"How good is the suspension? It looked good."
"Very robust."
"I need to pass it on to our industry so that they can start designing trucks and possibly armoured cars, too. You'll be with him at the forward HQ. If you have spare time we need to type up a formal specification based upon your report. So make sure you take a typewriter with you to Salisbury. By the way, Stonehenge is nearby."
I didn't go to the hotel this evening. Sally and I were alone with Mum. I'd read the personnel files and since she would be going to the annex tomorrow I gave her some notes for COL Wilkins and asked her to bring home the files of the RAF personnel. The landlord of the of the hotel called saying that there was a letter from Germany for me. Mum offered to get it. Canaris or Rommel? It was both. Canaris had included a letter from Erwin with his. Erwin arrived home OK. His next assignment will be as an instructor at the new War Academy in Potsdam, near Berlin. I asked Sally to prepare an English translation of Canaris' letter tomorrow.
"I'll prepare it now," she replied. "So you can discuss it with General Gort on the road to Colchester."
Tomorrow's promising to be another long day.
