In October 1935 Hitler ordered the creation of three Panzer Divisions. The 1st Panzer Division was formed from the 3rd Cavalry Division, and was headquartered in Weimar. The 2nd Panzer Division was headquartered in Würzburg, Bavaria and commanded by Heinz Guderian. The 3rd Panzer Division was formed from elements of the 1st and 3rd Cavalry Division and was headquartered in the German capital Berlin.
