Edward was in his office. "I hope you have nothing planned for this evening because you are invited to a working dinner at my place."
"What's going on?" he asked.
"I'll tell you on the way home." Since he had his car I was still explaining when we arrived home.
"So you are expecting a call from America, from your brother John?"
"Yes. We need to know about the status of his R-2600 negotiations and we need to buy six of them for our prototypes."
"Got it."
"So let's see what's for dinner. Today's Monday so if there are leftovers from the roast yesterday hopefully we'll have Lancashire hotpot. I love it."
Lancashire hotpot it was. John called at 20:30 which is 15:30 in Washington DC. "How's DC, John?"
"It could be worse. I hear you have been asking about the R-2600 and whether we can build it under licence. Is that correct?"
"Yes it is. Do you have any good news for me?"
"Yes and no. They don't have any customers yet so they can produce 30 per month as exports. If we need more we can produce them at Allison Engine Company. The same if they receive orders from a US aircraft producer."
"Great news but at the moment we only need six for our prototypes. How about Allison and Merlin engines?"
"They would welcome the contract. I've also asked North American to design a fighter around the engine. A long-range fighter for the US market but I'm sure the RAF could use it too."
"I'm sure they could. To escort our bombers to Berlin. I'll give you CPT Wales because he is the project officer."
"The Prince of Wales?"
"Yes. Here he is. Greetings to Edward III from me." I gave the phone to Edward. "Where do you want the engines to be sent, Bob?" He asked a couple of minutes later.
"To Gloster Aircraft where the F.5/34 is. Also, we need the dimensions and weight of the R-2600."
"So I have all the information. He said that he should be back in England next Monday. Time for me to go home."
"Of course. Meet me at the Annex tomorrow morning and thank you, Edward."
I sat next to Sally. "Another good day but a long one. Luigi is no longer a POW and like Irvine he is now a brevet-LTC. He's celebrating at the hotel. I have to go. Do you want to accompany me? Please?"
"Let's go."
