We had a very constructive meeting this afternoon at th MCD. I first told them about my conversations earlier today then asked how we can best stabilize Palestine. I asked the feasibility of a joint British-Jewish force in Palestine and a joint British-Arab force in Transjordan. Also whether Palestine could be split into two parts because there are already two parallel functioning administrations. Should an Arab Palestine become part of Emir Abdullah's Transjordan? What about the status Jerusalem? Can we treat the old city similar to the Vatican City? How many extra British troops are required in a worst case scenario?
More questions than answers but I want to come back from my Middle East trip with constructive proposals? I told them that I aim to be in Alexandria NLT 06 December. I made my own notes then typed up a memorandum for myself, not Winston. Time to go home and hopefully a quiet evening. Just before I left Rab Butler called and asked if we could meet at the Saffron Hotel this evening and vote at the same time tomorrow. Why not?
