The cabinet was pretty boring actually. We spent a couple of hours congratulating each other but I did say a few words. I addressed the reason my position was created in the first place.
"There has been considerable criticism that the government is not doing enough to counter German rearmament. I reject this criticism categorically. First, there is not just Germany that we should be concerned about. There is also the Soviet Union, Imperial Japan and until recently there was an Italian problem. Thanks to the resolve of this government an alliance against Italy was organized and Mussolini was removed from power and the Italian armed forces were decisively defeated. He and Italy are no longer a threat to the British Empire or our allies.
Secondly one of the first decisions of the new government was to create TRADOC in March of this year. A command where I was working until my new appointment a couple of weeks ago. I know first-hand that we have been optimizing our defence readiness, rejecting useless designs and promoting promising designs. On the 6th of this month a new monoplane fighter had its maiden flight. An aircraft which is more than 100 mph faster than our current fighters and armed with eight machine guns. No other country has a aircraft of this calibre.
Thirdly we have doubled the size of the British Army in the last eight months and it shall not only be motorized or mechanized but also equipped with better weapons than any other British Army. I can guarantee you that if Mr. Hitler or any other upstart challenges Britain they will regret it. Thank you."
Well, that was my first cabinet speech. The PM and Foreign Secretary thanked me for clarifying the issue. Afterwards we walked to the MoD for a Defence Council meeting.
