At the palace we made a couple of telephone calls and arranged to meet retired LG Henri Winkelmann in Maastricht at 19:30. I've also arranged for a member of the Royal Household to accompany Sally to the Great Synagogue of Brussels which is located at 32 Rue de la Régence. That'll keep her busy while I'm in Holland and maybe she'll meet leading members of the Jewish community in Brussels. At 16:30 King Leopold returned from the Royal Palace of Brussels and we had an informal conversation. I told him about my activities during the day and he welcomed the offer to invite General van Oberstraeten to TRADOC. He preferred that the fighter I mentioned be manufactured in Belgium under licence. I said that it is negotiable except for the engine. It will have to be imported. We talked in length about unofficially including Holland into the Locarno framework. I argued that in a future European conflict it is unlikely that Holland could stay neutral. Germany's border with France has changed since 1914 and the Maginot Line is almost forcing another Schlieffen Plan but further north. After a small supper we left the palace. First we took Sally and her companion to the synagogue then we picked up the sergeant's girlfriend, (so he wouldn't be alone at the restaurant). We then drove to Maastricht.
